From Kejriwal’s Right Hand to Political Exile: The Sidelining of Raghav Chadha

The political landscape of the Aam Aadmi Party (AAP) has been rocked by a tectonic shift. Once considered the "blue-eyed boy" of Arvind Kejriwal and the sophisticated face of the party’s national ambitions, Raghav Chadha has found himself abruptly moved from the inner circle to the cold sidelines.

The formalization of this rift came on April 2, 2026, when AAP officially replaced Chadha with Ashok Kumar Mittal as the party’s Deputy Leader in the Rajya Sabha. However, for keen political observers, the writing has been on the wall for over two years.

Below, we analyze the timeline of silence and the specific "missing" stances that led to the downfall of AAP’s most visible MP.

1. The London Disconnect: Wimbledon vs. Tihar

The first major crack in the relationship appeared in March 2024. As AAP National Convenor Arvind Kejriwal was being arrested by the ED in the excise policy case—the most existential crisis in the party's history—Raghav Chadha was notably absent.

While the rest of the party leadership was being detained at ITO or protesting on the streets, reports and social media images placed Chadha in London. While the official reason given was an emergency eye surgery, the optics were devastating. Critics and party insiders pointed out that while his mentor was in a cell, Chadha was seen attending Wimbledon and enjoying the high life with his wife, Parineeti Chopra. This "vacation" during a party funeral was a slight the AAP top brass has clearly not forgotten.

One tweeter user asked him that: Dear @Raghav_Chadha ,
These days, you're raising too many good questions to the government for the people. I appreciate it. Loved it. Keep raising such issues.
But now let me ask you a few questions. I hope you'll be honest.
- You booked the Taj Lake Palace 5-star hotel in Udaipur.
~ 40-50 rooms were booked
~ 100-200 guests attended
- Wedding placed at The Leela Palace 5-star hotel in Udaipur As per some wedding planners, the normal cost of a wedding at the Taj is ₹1-5 crore.
Your net worth is ~₹50 lakh to ₹1+ crore (based on election affidavits on Myneta), so you are obviously not going to waste your entire net worth on just a wedding. So, how did you get so much money to host the wedding at the Taj? Please answer.

Abhinav Pandey from the News Pinch asked that. Is it his popularity or something else. That forced AAP to sideline him.

2. Silence on the "Big Issues"

A Member of Parliament is expected to be the voice of the people on national crises. However, a look at Chadha’s recent track record shows a curious pattern of silence on issues that are standard ammunition for the Opposition:

  • The Rupee Free Fall: Despite being a Chartered Accountant, Chadha remained largely silent as the Indian Rupee hit record lows against the dollar, failing to lead the charge on the government’s economic management.

  • LPG and Oil Crisis: While the common man struggled with fluctuating fuel prices, Chadha’s social media was more focused on lifestyle and "samosas" than the kitchen-table economics that AAP was founded upon.

  • The ECI Petition: In a move that shocked many, when nearly 200 Opposition MPs signed a petition against the Election Commission of India (ECI) regarding "vote chori" and transparency, Raghav Chadha’s signature was missing.

  • Infrastructure & Safety: Whether it was the crumbling infrastructure in major cities or the tragic "sewage water deaths" and cough syrup scandals, Chadha failed to leverage his Rajya Sabha platform to demand accountability from the Centre.

3. A "Soft" Stance on the BJP?

The most damaging allegation within the AAP corridors is that Chadha has developed a "fear" of the CBI and ED.

Since 2024, Chadha has noticeably softened his tone toward Prime Minister Narendra Modi and the BJP leadership. Unlike his colleagues Sanjay Singh or Manish Sisodia, who returned from jail with renewed fire, Chadha’s interventions became increasingly technical and safe.

The Turning Point: In February 2026, when Kejriwal and Sisodia were finally discharged in the excise case, the entire party celebrated it as a "victory of truth." Raghav Chadha did not tweet, did not attend the victory rally at Jantar Mantar, and did not visit Kejriwal’s residence.

Sanjay Jha from AAP said, Aam Aadmi Party हमें सिखाती है कि अन्याय के खिलाफ निडर होकर खड़े रहें। पर जब पार्टी और लोकतंत्र को आपकी ज़रूरत थी, तब आपकी चुप्पी सवाल खड़े करती है।

The fauxy said, 𝗥𝗮𝗴𝗵𝗮𝘃 𝗖𝗵𝗮𝗱𝗵𝗮 𝗟𝗲𝗮𝗿𝗻𝘀 𝘁𝗼 𝗦𝗽𝗲𝗮𝗸 𝗮𝘁 𝟮𝗫 𝗦𝗽𝗲𝗲𝗱 𝗔𝗳𝘁𝗲𝗿 𝗔𝗔𝗣 𝗖𝘂𝘁𝘀 𝗛𝗶𝘀 𝗔𝗹𝗹𝗼𝘁𝘁𝗲𝗱 𝗧𝗶𝗺𝗲 𝗶𝗻 𝗣𝗮𝗿𝗹𝗶𝗮𝗺𝗲𝗻𝘁

4. The Institutional Removal

The AAP leadership's response has been surgical. The party didn't just remove him from a title; they effectively gagged him.

Action TakenImpact
Removed as Deputy LeaderLost the power to coordinate party strategy in the Upper House.
Speaking Time RequestAAP formally requested the RS Secretariat not to allot him time from the party's quota.
Star Campaigner ListHe was dropped from the list for the upcoming 2026 Assembly elections.

5. Is a Defection Looming?

Rumors are swirling in New Delhi that Chadha is looking for a "safe exit." His refusal to walk out with the Opposition during key protests and his silence on BJP’s alleged electoral malpractices in West Bengal (against the TMC) suggest a leader who is no longer interested in the "anti-establishment" brand of politics.

As one senior AAP leader whispered, "You cannot be a revolutionary on weekdays and a socialite on weekends."

By prioritizing personal optics over party loyalty during the "Kejriwal Arrest" era, Chadha has traded his political capital for a quiet life. Whether he is truly "silenced but not defeated" or simply waiting for a new jersey to wear remains the biggest question of 2026.

At the last i will say if you fear you will lose. So, don't fear of anything.
